Outdoor Furniture Timber Characteristics
Eden outdoor furniture is proudly made in New Zealand by
Danske Møbler. It is assembled with corrosion-free stainless
steel bolts and screws and marine epoxy glue for all-weather
strength.
The timbers used are a combination of courbaril, rosewood (both oiled) and rosawa (unoiled) woods, all of which have been selectively felled from sustainably managed forests. These woods are some of the most durable in the world and very suited for use outdoors due to their inherent strength and density. Expect cracks, splits and twisting to appear in the timber, particularly on the end grain and to a lesser extent on the surface. This is normal behaviour of wood suitable for use outdoors, occurring as the natural oils and minerals evaporate with exposure to the sun, wind and rain. The furniture is designed with this in mind and its strength and durability remain unaffected. The stainless steel frames used on Inlet are 304 grade (imported). It is essential to establish a regular cleaning and maintenance programme to ensure the furniture remains in good condition and appearance.
How to care for your outdoor furniture: Rosawa (Unoiled) To remove grime, mould, salt and other surface attacking substances, wash the furniture at least every 3 months with laundry powder, Napisan, 30 Seconds cleaner or Wet and Forget cleaner, as directed by the product’s instructions. The wood will bleach to a very light grey/white colour. This cleaning process is similar to scrubbing teak decks on boats. Courbaril (Oiled) To maintain the ‘treated look’ of oiled courbaril timber, oil with Eden oil (available in-store) within a month of delivery. Repeat procedure 2 – 3 times on surface areas for the fi rst 6 months. Thereafter, reoil once a season. It is important to read and follow the instructions on the can carefully before using any outdoor oil. Rosewood (Oiled) To maintain the treated look of oiled rosewood timber, oil with Jarrah oil (available in-store) within a month of delivery. Repeat procedure 2 – 3 times on surface areas for the fi rst 6 months. Thereafter, reoil once a season. It is important to read and follow the instructions on the can carefully before using any outdoor oil. FIRE WARNING All rags used to oil furniture must be hung out to dry before disposal. Damp oily rags left in a bundle can self ignite and catch fire, as the oil is highly flammable. Stainless Steel Periodically, clean and polish the stainless steel frames using Autosol Metal Polish, Brasso, Jif or car cutting compound. Locations close to coastal areas require more frequent maintenance due to the effects of salt air. |
